This question is so important if you suffer from Irritable Bowel Syndrome!
Do you know what villi and microvilli are?
The villi are finger-like projections that line your small intestine. The microvilli are the hair-like projections on the villi.
There are 6000-25,000 villi per square inch of tissue in your small intestine. And the small intestine is 25 feet long! That’s a lot of villi.
These microvilli contain digestive enzymes that help us digest foods, including dairy foods (which contain lactose) and carbohydrates.
If these little finger-like projections and hair like projections are damaged, we won’t be able to digest those foods. As a result, the bacteria in our digestive tract end up digesting the foods. The result can be gas (particularly trapped), bloating, abdomoinal pain, diarrhea, or constipation.
This is often labeled as SIBO, or small intestinal bacteria overgrowth. There is also SIFO - small intestinal fungal overgrowth. Unfortunately, many people with IBS have both.
We have to repair the villi and microvilli in order to heal your gut! Then you will be able to digest foods properly and the bacteria and yeasts in the small intestine will not be able to flourish and cause you discomfort.
If you have been through typical SIBO treatment, it’s usually all about killing the bacteria or yeast in the small intestine. While this is important, we also have to focus on healing the villi and microvilli! Or the bacteria will go right back to eating your food and will flourish, causing your pain, bloating, gas, diarrhea, or constipation.
